The Centre will support over 25 school leavers with Autism, intellectual disabilities, and other support needs.
Minister of State for Disability Anne Rabbitte TD opened a state-of-the-art Day service in Thurles, Co Tipperary, offering person-centred care for school-leavers with disabilities. Hayfield Manor is run by RehabCare, the care division of the Rehab Group. Participants will receive support in small groups, with opportunities for one-to-one support based on funding from the Health Service Executive (HSE).
Accepting referrals from school leavers in North Tipperary and the surrounding catchment area, Hayfield Manor’s new service will eventually accommodate up to 40 school leavers. In line with the principles of New Directions, the facility also offers an outreach service to extend its reach. The service will provide a structured and supportive environment for school leavers. Located beside the scenic Loughtagalla Park and within walking distance of the town centre, the service is strategically positioned for easy access to local amenities, including sports clubs, shops, and restaurants.
The primary goals of the new service are centred around enhancing individuals’ quality of life. By fostering personal autonomy, status, competence, and community involvement, the service aims to empower participants to lead fulfilling lives.
Director of RehabCare Grainne Fogarty said: “The launch of Hayfield Manor marks a significant milestone in our commitment to empowering individuals with diverse needs and providing a person-centred service for young people leaving school who have Autism, Intellectual Disabilities and other support needs. RehabCare is a recognised leader in providing support services committed to enhancing the lives of individuals with disabilities supporting them to live more independent lives of their choosing. The service will provide a nurturing environment that fosters personal development, community engagement, and independence. When fully operational this facility will provide support for 40 families and individuals in North Tipperary and surrounding region. Delivery of this project would not have been possible without the support of our colleagues in the HSE and staff across the Rehab Group and RehabCare regional team. Participants at Hayfield Manor will benefit from a diverse range of activities and programs, including horse riding, music therapy, gardening, vocational and educational opportunities and independent living skills. The service also provides access to a sister facility, Thurles Resource Centre located on the Stradavoher site, for additional programs.
William Ryan’s son William Junior (19), who has Autism, is one of the school leavers who will attend Hayfield. “Ten years ago, William completed Special Ed School in Cashel, where he started as a playful, vulnerable child. Now at 19, he is an almost six-feet-tall adult man with Autism and new challenges. We brought William to an expert on Autism and it was at this juncture that we discovered the transformative impact of RehabCare’s Thurles Resource Centre. They respected William and also accommodated our informed choices for our son.”

Day services play a pivotal role in providing vital support, enabling people with disabilities to fully engage in the fabric of their community and actualise their ambitions and desires,” said Minister Rabbitte.
Minister Rabbitte underscored her commitment to facilitating a seamless transition from school to adult Day services for young adults. Ensuring a smooth journey for our adult school leavers has been a priority throughout my tenure as Minister, and this commitment has been reflected in continuous investments. In Budget 2024, €18.2 million has been allocated to secure placements in adult day services for 1,250-1,400 young individuals embarking on this transitional phase.”

Hayfield Manor’s School Leaver Day Service features dedicated spaces such as a sensory room, canteen, and program rooms, ensuring a conducive environment for various activities.
