National Learning Network provides training and specialist support to people who, for a variety of reasons, may find it difficult to gain employment. National Learning Network helps neuro-divergent people including autistic people.
What is Autism?
Autism is an invisible, complex neurological condition that influences how people experience and interact with the world. Approximately 1% of the population are born autistic, each person with a diagnosis of autism is unique.
People whose brains function differently to the general population are considered to be neuro-divergent, autism falls into this category. We need to affirm the neuro-divergent experience though understanding, empathy and curiosity.
How National Learning Network Helps Autistic People
· NLN strives to understand each autistic person’s unique experience
· Staff are supported to avail of specialist training which adheres to the principles of a neurodiversity affirmative approach
· Staff are aware of co-occurring conditions/experiences that are often experienced by autistic individuals and are sensitive to associated needs (e.g. anxiety, depression, gender identity differences, communication differences, sensory differences)
· NLN strives to provide low arousal environments for those who need this
· NLN strives to listen to the voice and wishes of each student and holds this central to service planning and provision
· The organisation is working towards quality standards accreditation with the National Autistic Society in the UK
· Programmes in National Learning Network implement the principals of Universal Design for Learning giving all students equal opportunities to learn
· During their time with National Learning Network all students have access to the support of a multidisciplinary team comprising of a rehabilitation officer, psychologist, resource teacher and advocacy officer.
