At NLN in Sligo we provide a range of free courses to people who have had an accident, illness, injury or have a disability and extra support needs.

Our courses are tailored to each student’s needs, to help them to build their confidence while getting practical job-seeking skills to help them get a job or go on to further training.

Connections – reaching your full potential

This programme is dedicated to supporting young adults with Autism in their journey to college, careers, and beyond. Connections uniquely blend self-discovery, digital skills, work placement, environmental awareness and personalised guidance to nurture a person’s growth and development.

Students are supported in sourcing their first work placement. Connections focuses on two key factors for success in career development. The first is classroom activities where students receive career guidance and support including selecting a realistic career, job search strategies, applications and resumes, and interviewing aspects. The second is through experiential learning on a work placement. The work placement will provide opportunity to build and practice identified skills while gaining confidence to enhance career potential.

Possible placements with local employers may include, but are not limited to: Animal Care, Clerical, Child Care, Health Care, Hospitality, Landscaping, Outdoor Work, Marketing/Retail and Technology.

Customer Service

This is a flexible course that helps students to practice and develop practical and relevant skills in a retail or customer service based work environment. The classroom-based learning will support and enhance their on-site training and will include subjects such as Work Place Safety, Customer Service, Personal Effectiveness and Career Planning. The course is designed to give students the skills, attitudes and practical experience necessary to get a job by developing and using practical communication, customer service and teamwork skills.

Certification: QQI Level 4 Retail Skills (4M1998).

IT with Office Administration

This course provides training in all aspects of office applications and allows students to pursue a career in an Office or IT environment or progress towards further training. Applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Sage Accounts & Payroll and Image editing are just some of the modules on offer leading to a QQI Level 5 Major Award

Career Pathways

This course develops the relevant knowledge, skill and competences needed to use a range of skills and tools, under direction and with limited autonomy, related to seeking employment or to being in employment. It enables the student develop personal qualities and strengths so they can make informed choices to pursue a range of employment opportunities or to progress to further education or training.

Reception & Office Skills with ICDL

The course modules aim to equip students with the necessary knowledge, skills and competencies required to work in an office environment, in the hotel tourism and leisure industry, or other front of house reception area, across retail, manufacturing and service industries.

Modules include: General Office Skills, Communications, Maths, Information Technology Skills, Work Experience, Business English, Customer Service, ICDL, Computer Applications, Bookkeeping & Accounts.

Horsemanship

The Horsemanship course is for people who want to work with horses. The Horsemanship course is designed to give students hands on learning, so that they can learn the skills, abilities and practical experience necessary to get a job within the equine industry.
