At NLN in Maynooth we provide a new Skills 4 Life Programme that is a KWETB funded and aimed at young adults who may or may not have experienced a set-back in life which has prevented or delayed the young person reaching their full potential to date. The courses are totally inclusive and open to any student who would benefit from smaller classes supported by a Multi-Disciplinary Team that has a ‘student-centric’ approach to academic learning and social/personal development. CAO points are not required for entry and students on the course develop and take ‘ownership of their future pathway’ into further Adult Further Education (PLC Course) or their first step into the workforce of a chosen career or employment sector

Access

What is the Access course?

This rehabilitative foundation programme is designed for young adults with mild learning difficulties. The aim of the programme is to equip students with basic level personal, social and work-related skills. Students will progress to greater levels of independence, learn to manage their health and well-being, and be supported and encouraged to participate in their own communities, workplaces and society. Almost every National Learning Network centre offers and Access course so contact your nearest centre to discuss.

What does the course entail?

It is designed to provide a mix of social skills, personal effectiveness, career exploration and vocational skills sampling, this course enables students to make realistic choices for training and employment based on their individual strengths and abilities.

Literacy and numeracy needs are also addressed to allow students to overcome any obstacles to participating fully in their communities. Opportunities to demonstrate the skills and knowledge learned in the training centres are identified within the community in efforts to encourage students to participate fully as active citizens in their own locality and move towards living independently.
