Adrian Allen, Production Operator, Rehab Logistics, Limerick
My name is Adrian Allen, I am 42 yrs old and I live in Croom, Co. Limerick. I work in Rehab Enterprises Limerick as a production operator. I went to school in Newcastle West and when I finished at the age of 16, I was not sure what to do with my life. My mother helped me apply to Rehab for a training programme in 1987. I got on a catering programme first which lasted a few years, where I learned how to cook and clean. After the catering programme, I was lucky enough to move on to electronics where I received training on many different components. After my training I went to work with Response Electronic manufacturing (Gandon Enterprises) and I became a full time employee in 1994 and I have worked there ever since.
My life has had up and downs, I suffer from depression and have done for a number of years. I find that working and keeping down a full time job in Rehab Enterprises keeps me well. I have experienced some very hard times and in 2008, I lost my father Frank through a long-term illness. This was a very hard time, Dad died on the 8th of March 2008 and although I was broken hearted I felt that the best thing to help me through was to come back to work to all the lads and continue working, so I did on the 14th of March. I found it hard but all the lads helped me cope as they talked to me and cared how I was feeling as many of them had experienced the same loss.
My work means everything to me, it keeps me in a routine and gives me something to get up for every day. I have been given lots of training over the years in my job, I can work on the print line assembly, put valves into tubes, make boxes and many other jobs. I have also received training in manual handling, mental health awareness, personal hygiene, dignity in the workplace and health and safety. I have a brilliant attendance record and I get on with everyone in the job, there is always someone to talk to if I not feeling well. My depression is kept away by keeping busy, meeting my friends at work everyday and talking to others just like me.
